How this estimate works

Uses a fixed annual interest rate divided by 12, with payments at the end of each month starting next month. Extra payments reduce principal. Excludes fees, penalties, missed payments and daily interest differences. Use your loan's interest rate, which may differ from its APR. Confirm how your lender applies extra payments. This is an estimate, not an official lender payoff quote.

SELLING WITH A LOAN

You can have a loan.
And a next step.

Before you sell, understand what you owe, what your car could sell for, and how the lender will release its lien.

1

Get an official payoff quote.

Ask your lender for a payoff quote and its expiration date. It can differ from your statement balance because of interest or fees. Check for any early-payoff penalty.

2

Compare the offer with what you owe.

If the sale price exceeds the payoff, the difference is your equity before transaction costs. If it falls short, you have negative equity and need a plan for the gap.

An example

$22,000 offer − $20,000 payoff = $2,000 equity before costs.

3

Coordinate payment and the title.

Ask the lender and buyer how payment, any shortfall, the lien release and title transfer will be handled. Requirements vary by lender and state; confirm the steps before handing over the vehicle.

4

Confirm your loan is closed.

Keep the sale and payment records, and confirm the lender received the payoff. Check for a zero balance before stopping scheduled payments.

A FEW COMMON QUESTIONS

Know before you decide.

Is this calculator an official payoff quote?

No. It estimates future payments and interest. Request a dated payoff quote directly from your lender for the exact amount needed to close your loan.

What if I owe more than the car is worth?

The difference is negative equity. Discuss how you would cover it with the lender and buyer before agreeing to a sale. Rolling a shortfall into another loan increases the amount borrowed and can increase total cost.

Where do I get a vehicle offer?

The Get an Offer links take you to the existing VinSell form, where you can enter your vehicle information and continue the selling process.

Will extra payments always save interest?

The calculator assumes extra payments reduce principal on an amortizing loan. Your contract and the lender’s payment rules matter. Check for prepayment penalties and confirm how extra payments are applied.
